Say goodbye to the ‘Brexit effect’ on jobs

with No Comments

Just over a quarter of recruiters believe that Brexit will see an improvement for them, according to research by ADVANCE. Furthermore, over half have not witnessed any fluctuation in demand for contractors since the British public reached its collective decision last June. In fact, more respondents predicted a post-Brexit contractors boom than a bust.

The financial sector is a microcosm of this market confidence. Morgan McKinley’s latest jobs report into that industry featured this quote from Hakan Enver, their Operations Director: “Employers are telling us that they’re no longer factoring Brexit into their hiring decisions. They are working with what they have, not what may or may not happen in years to come.” Is it too much of a stretch to muse that recruiters are, professionally, finally ‘living in the moment’ and no longer worrying about future skills shortages or talent droughts that may never materialise?

Year-on-year there has been an effect – an 11% drop in City jobs - but this has mellowed since January. In contrast, Robert Walters saw a 21% increase in job volume. Chris Hickey, Chief Executive Officer at Robert Walters - UK, Middle East & Africa, proclaimed: “Employers are maintaining a ‘business as usual’ approach with demand for professionals in financial services remaining strong.” Mark Woffenden, Finance Director at Leeds-based recruitment agency Lucy Walker Recruitment, agrees with Hickey. He told Insider: “Things have carried on as they were prior to Brexit raising its head.”
