Overview
A great opportunity has arisen for a Technical Author to join the engineering department of a manufacturer based in Bridgend, South Wales. You can expect to achieve a salary of £22,000 - £30,000 (depending upon experience). Hours of work are 37 per week, Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 5.00pm and Friday 8.30am to 1.30pm. The company offer 25 days holiday a year plus Bank Holidays and have pension, profit related pay and life assurance schemes.
The Role
You will be responsible for managing the preparation and maintenance of technical documentation to support the range of both legacy products and new product introductions. You will transfer the necessary technical information into high quality, easy to understand content for technical manuals, product specifications, online content and internal corporate publications. You will ensure the successful delivery of product documentation on time and against budget.
Duties will include:
• Preparation (write, edit, update and proofread) of both internal and external technical documentation, online content and in-house corporate publications. Principally this includes User Manuals, Training Manuals and Technical Support documentation for complex machine tooling and automation systems.
• Use of Madcap authoring software (Flare, Lingo, Capture, Mimic and Analyser) as the publishing solution for printed documentation and local desktop, internet and mobile applications.
• Support the optimisation of machine documentation through digital media with improved video installation and set-up guides.
• To maintain proficiency in single sourcing, ASD-STE, BS EN 82079-1:2012, BS EN ISO 12100:2010 and XML file formats.
• Maintain and demonstrate up-to-date technical knowledge.
• Work closely with engineering teams to obtain the necessary source information.
• Interpret drawings and machine specifications in order to be able to document processes and procedures required for the safe and effective operation of products.
• Procure and manipulate drawings and models from the Mechanical Design department to create accurate documentation.
• To inspect documentation and ensure compliance with corporate branding, specifications and deadlines.
• Provide pivotal administrative support to the company’s Engineering Change Notice (ECN) Procedure.
• Maintain revision-control and document-management systems.
• Ensure all product documentation conforms to contract standards and is of sufficient clarity to remove any risk of misinterpretation which might lead to claims against the Company, noting that manuals will require translation due to the extent of export sales.
• Ensure instructions for the operation and maintenance of third party products which are transferred into documentation are in accordance with original manufacturers’ specifications.
• Assist the Quality / Health & Safety Manager in ensuring that the Company’s library of technical manuals is maintained.
• Provide input into annual budgetary requirements.
• Undertake other projects and duties as required and which are within the competence of the job holder.
The Person
The job holder must be able to work with a range of technologies, including mechanical, electrical, opto-electronics and software and be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the technical terminology, drawings and specifications in order to be able to translate these into understandable manuals. The provision of clear, concise and workable documentation is a critical part of product delivery, required to enable the safe and efficient operation of products. It will ultimately lend itself to providing a high level of training documentation to customers and employees alike.
Qualifications / Experience
• HNC level as a minimum with at least 3 years’ experience as a Technical Author in a product design background and demonstrating a good general level of mechanical and electrical knowledge.
• Competence in the use of a technical authoring software package for the creation of documentation that has been used both internally and externally. Other supporting software tools could include Microsoft Office and CAD packages. Additionally, working with specifications, risk assessments and quality documentation will demonstrate useful underpinning knowledge.
