The Role
To lead and drive the Environmental, Sustainability and Health & Safety strategy in accordance with the Environmental and Health & Safety policy and procedures, monitor environmental strategies and promote continuous improvement. To ensure best practice is maintained at all times and as a group pro-actively managing Risks & Opportunities. To provide support and direction for non UK sites in the European Group on Environmental & Sustainability measures.
1. Environmental Management
Provide Environmental systems for all operating sites and ensure compliance with customer and regulatory body requirements.
Manage the company’s IS(phone number removed) EMS ensuring appropriate controls, systems and procedures are in place to minimise any enviromental incidents.
Audit, analyse and report environmental performance to internal and external bodies as required.
Monitor compliance with systems and procedures through a formal internal audit programme.
Ensure consistency of systems across Wellington, Bideford and Tabor sites.
Responsible for carbon disclosure for all sites.
Ensure relevant accreditations are managed appropriately. (FSC/RSPO/ECOVARDIS)
Advise on environmental systems were appropriate.
2. Sustainability
Promote and drive sustainability projects across the group both production and product related.
Work with the R&D and packaging teams driving choice and systems to prioritise safe and sustainable materials.
Maintain awareness of key product and packaging related environmental issues and assist customer facing teams in developing policy and approach for best practice/offering options and information on issues for use with Customers and in product development
3. Health & Safety
Lead the Health & Safety Culture across the sites.
Ensure best practice and legal requirements are adhered to.
Manage KPI’s and reporting requirements
Lead site process Safety and H&S Forums and maintain action log statistics.
4. People Management
Line Manager responsibility for Group Health and Safety Manager.
Promote and raise awareness of the impact of emerging environmental issues and ensure all staff are aware of Environmental objectives.
Ensure all staff are properly trained and records are kept.
Implement a behavioural safety improvement programme.
5.Planning & Organisation
Liaise with service providers.
Ensure Aspects & Impacts assessments are carried out and documented.
In house expert for environmental compliance.
Ensure safe working practices are established and monitor compliance.
Budgetary controls – O/T and “Revenue” expenditure.
Work closely with engineering on process changes/capex to ensure H&S compliance at User requirement stage and through the change process.
Devise strategies to meet targets and encourage best practice.
6. Improvement Initiatives & Audits
Monitor and investigate all Environmental complaints.
Establish root cause of complaints/non- conformances and plan remedial actions.
Recommend and implement improvements to process and procedures to improve Environmental performance and efficiency.
Prepare for, host and co-ordinate responses to factory environment audits.
Conduct external audits of waste disposal contractors and other specified service providers.
Establish and manage internal audit programmes for environment.
Conduct Internal Audits.
Skills
- Passion and appreciation for the natural environment. An environmental qualification would be an advantage.
- Lower & Upper Tier COMAH site/ATEX awareness.
- Qualified Chemist, Chemical Engineer or similar scientific based subject.
- Previous experience within a chemical manufacturing environment.
- Minimum (AIOSH/Tech IOSH)
- Good understanding of IS(phone number removed) standards.
- Understanding of BSI audit procedures.
- Understanding of Environmental legislation.
- Good analytical skills and a logical approach to problem solving.
- Good leadership, Organisational and Communication Skills.
- Ability to prioritise workloads.
- Ability to form working relationships with other managers, controlling similar practically based functions.
- Computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint plus company business operating systems.
- Life Cycle Analysis Skills
